Central East African Railways (CEAR), jointly with its Mozambican sister company, Corridor Desenvolvimento Do Norte (CDN), runs a concession to manage and operate the Nacala Railway Corridor. The concession that began in 1999 has recently been renewed to run up to 2045.
The Nacala corridor spans a length of 807 kilometers from Blantyre to Nacala, 988 kilometers from Kanengo (Lilongwe) to Nacala and 1150 kilometers from Chipata (Zambia). Jointly owned by a Brazilian mining and logistics giant, Vale, Mitsui of Japan and the Mozambican Railway Port Company, Caminhos de Ferro de Mozambique (CFM) as the main shareholders, CEAR and CDN are the only railway transport service provider on the Nacala Railway Corridor.
In May 1999, a consortium led by RDC was awarded the concession for Malawi's railway, a network extending from the Zambian border in the West to connections with Mozambique's Nacala Corridor to the East and Mozambique's Beira corridor to the South (the Beira corridor has been closed since the mid 1980's as a result of Mozambique's civil war).
